I initially created this project to study the scale detail of clay sculptor Grigritsfx, whose work I've greatly admired, while also trying to assert myself as a creature designer, rather than only recreating concepts others have made. This design is 100% my own, with inspiration from all sorts of sources I've encountered over the past years.
I tried to think of how it would behave, socialize, feed and interact with its environment, and imagined this creature in a very saturated icy desert like environment with northern lights in the sky, glass mountains in the horizon and a sea of broken mirrors splitting the sand dunes.
I've tried to share the process as much as I was comfortable with, and it's been a great motivational factor for me to have so much encouraging response.
I had a lot of ideas for colors and poses for this creature, and decided to downscale my scope to a more realistic goal - I have other projects in mind that I have to get started on as well.
The iridescence found in crustaceans and insects are always a great inspiration to me and naturally I wanted to experiment with it in my own creatures as well and find a pipeline that would support my visions.
I really enjoyed this process of taking my time and redoing my work every time I didn't feel 100% satisfied with it.
Eventually I'd love to try and 3d print it in a couple of different poses, but for now that'll have to wait.

This has been a great learning curve of challenging myself in both Zbrush, Max, Substance Painter and Marmoset Toolbag. Final textures are 4K resolution.
